The FATA Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) on Friday announced a fresh policy under which each returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) families could now withdraw the Rs.35,000 cash grant whenever needed.
FDMA director general Nasir Durrani said that under the old policy, the cash grant would get redeposited into the authority’s account if the amount was not be withdrawn within six months.
“The old policy has now been scrapped and replaced,” Durrani said, adding that cash of thousands of tribal families was trapped because most of them were unable to withdraw their money in time for one reason or the other.
“We were getting a huge number of complaints regarding non-withdrawal of cash. Keeping in view, the legitimate issues faced by tribal families, we have decided to make the tribal people able to withdraw their amount whenever they want,” he remarked.
Similarly, the FDMA director general announced that the IDPs of North Waziristan would now regularly get their monthly Rs.12,000 cash amount.
Earlier, displaced families from the tribal region, specifically from North Waziristan tribal district had staged protests in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, alleging unnecessary delays in payment of compensation.
The protestors had demanded the governor and other officials concerned to take corrective measures; otherwise a protest would be staged in Islamabad, they said.
They also talked about the plight of health and educational institutions in the tribal districts and grieved that the federal government has not paid any heed to solve these issues.
Meanwhile, efforts by the federal as well as provincial governments are underway to install effective governance structure, giving quick relief to the people of erstwhile FATA and, more importantly, bringing them into the mainstream.
Observers maintain that it is of paramount importance that quick measures are taken for transfer of resources from the federal government to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, besides removal of legal irritants in proposed exemption of FATA from federal and provincial taxes and collective responsibility for the infrastructure development in the newly merged districts.
